Voluntary Arts Scotland presents quilts to Olympians!
- Voluntary Arts Scotland presents quilts to Olympians!
The Quilts4London and A Gift of Quilts projects have been trying to get as many pennants and quilts into the hands of Olympic athletes as possible. So when we at Voluntary Arts Scotland were given the opportunity to hand over said quilts in Glasgow recently, our very own Gillian Harrison jumped at the chance. Here’s her story . . .
“Who would have thought that working for Voluntary Arts Scotland and being a member of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles would lead to meeting the London 2012 Olympic Team from Zambia?
Quilts4London and A Gift of Quilts are two Cultural Olympiad Inspire Projects, which Voluntary Arts and The Quilters’ Guild have supported. A Gift of Quilts has made 420 patchwork quilts, one for each country taking part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Quilts4london has made 17,000 pennants, one for each Olympic and Paralympic athlete.
They are all unique gifts of friendship from the people of the United Kingdom, made by over 35,000 people aged between 2 and 103 and encompassing all nationalities, religions and abilities. Voluntary Arts Scotland ran pennant making sessions at the Voluntary Arts Week event in May 2011 and at our Going for Gold conference in November 2011.
It was a wonderful experience to meet the Olympic athletes from Zambia, who were training in Glasgow. They were very friendly and interested in the quilt projects. I’m not much of a sporty type, but I do love quilts and by helping to support these projects I felt a real connection with the Olympic Games this year. It was an honour to do this and thanks to GlasgowLife for arranging the presentation.”

2012 Cultural Olympiad project

Back in autumn 2011, the museum welcomed a group of visitors from St Helens Day Opportunities at Stephenson’s Resource Centre, St Helens. The members of the group were all enrolled on the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) textile course and came to do research for a project they were carrying out as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. They enjoyed a tour of our then Changing Exhibition, On the March – An Exhibition of Banners Made by Ed Hall, given by exhibition curator Kate Chatfield, and they also explored the historic banners in our Main Galleries.
The museum was delighted to hear from the members of the group recently and find out that their trip had proved to be very useful and inspiring, as the group went on to design and create their own banners for the project. Most of all we were excited to see the fantastic finished banners!
“We had a marvellous time studying the banners including the Ed Hall exhibition, and were interested in all the extra information you gave us. We were pleased with the accessibility and the space to get around. We loved the tea and cakes!” “Your exhibition tour made us realise the importance of colour and good clear shapes in a banner design.” The banners the group made will be distributed to British Olympic Team Members. All the St Helens Day Opportunities group members have a physical disability and they have therefore asked that their banners be given to members of the Paralympics’ Team.
